Cross Therapy

Cross therapy is a form of therapy that combines professional psychological methods with Christian beliefs, scripture, and spiritual practices.

Note: Christian counselling differs from purely pastoral counselling (which is theological advice from a minister) or strict biblical counselling (which relies exclusively on scripture rather than clinical psychology), as clinical Christian therapy bridges licensed mental health training with a Christian worldview.

How It Works:

Evidence-Based Methods + Faith: Licensed Christian counsellors utilize standard therapeutic techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), or Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Spiritual Integration: Depending on the client’s preference, sessions may incorporate voluntary prayer, reading scripture, or discussing how faith impacts self-worth and decision-making.

Anxiety and Depression

Helping clients identify negative, distorted thought patterns and evaluate them against biblical truths or grace-oriented perspectives, similar to the ABCDE method in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Religiously Integrated CBT (RCBT): Structured research shows that adapting CBT to a client’s specific religious framework yields reductions in anxiety and depression comparable to standard CBT, while adding comfort through spiritual coping resources.

Addressing Control and Guilt: Anxiety is often unpacked through the lens of surrender and trust, working through the illusion of total self-control, while depression is met with grace, gentle behavioural activation (e.g., small steps like walking or connecting with others), and combatting isolation.

Addressing the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—recognizing that physical factors (sleep, nutrition, brain chemistry) and spiritual fatigue or relational wounds often intersect.

Trauma and PTSD

Biblical vs. Integrated Approaches: Some traditional biblical counseling models focus strictly on scripture, theology, and discipleship, while professional Christian counseling combines clinical training with spiritual resources to address the physical, emotional, and neurological impact of trauma on the nervous system

Integration of Faith and Clinical Care: Licensed Christian counsellors typically merge standard psychotherapeutic methods—such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), or somatic work—with prayer, scripture, and insights.

Trauma often shakes a person’s core beliefs, leading to feelings of abandonment, guilt, shame, or moral injury. Cross therapy provides a framework to process these questions through grace, confession, forgiveness, and the character of God.

Trauma can take many different forms. When we think of the effects of trauma, we tend to think of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Trauma can come from a variety of origins such as being a part of or witnessing a major accident, death, or a significantly terrifying life event. The memories that can become engrained in our thoughts — trauma can also come from something that develops, builds, or intensifies gradually over time rather than all at once. This can look like an abusive relationship or living in a high stress environment for a long period of time. Living in a constant state of fear or hyper arousal due to emotional and psychological pain can lead someone to develop symptoms of PTSD or another trauma-related disorder.
